A 360° camera records everything around it at once, so you can choose the angle after you've filmed instead of before. Insta360 has made consumer 360° cameras since 2015, and its newest flagship, the Insta360 X6, is the most capable 360° camera the company has built. Gizmodo rates its image quality the best available in a 360° camera today, and TechRadar calls it the best 360° camera for low-light shooting currently available.

This guide explains how 360° cameras work, how Insta360 got here, what changed from one generation to the next, and which 360° camera suits diving, motorcycles, track days, cycling, travel, vlogging and virtual tours.

What is a 360° camera and how does it work?

A 360° camera has two ultra-wide lenses facing in opposite directions. Each lens captures a little more than half a sphere. The camera, or the app, then stitches the two images into one seamless spherical video or photo.

That gives you three ways to use the footage:

  • Immersive 360° video that viewers can drag around on a phone, computer or VR headset.
  • Reframed flat video, where you pick the angle, zoom and camera moves afterwards and export a normal 16:9 or 9:16 clip for YouTube, Instagram or TikTok.
  • 360° photos for virtual tours, real estate listings and panoramas.

Insta360 calls this "shoot first, point later".

Where did Insta360 and consumer 360° cameras start?

Insta360 was founded in July 2015 by JK Liu, who started the company with fellow Nanjing University students. Their stated mission was to help people capture and share their lives. The company now has offices in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Berlin and Los Angeles.

The milestones that shaped the category:

  • 2016 – Insta360 Nano. A small 360° camera that plugged into an iPhone and turned the phone into a 360° camera.
  • 2017 – Insta360 ONE. 4K 360° video, six-axis gyroscope stabilisation, FreeCapture reframing ("shoot first, point later"), Bullet Time, and the Invisible Selfie Stick effect, where the stick is erased from the footage automatically.
  • 2018 – ONE X. Raised resolution to 5.7K and introduced FlowState stabilisation, which is known for gimbal-like smoothness and horizon levelling.
  • 2020 – ONE R and ONE X2. The modular ONE R was named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2020. The pocket-sized ONE X2 added a touchscreen and IPX8 waterproofing.
  • 2022 – X3. 1/2-inch sensors, 5.7K 360° video and 72MP 360° photos.
  • 2024 – X4. The jump to 8K 360° video. TIME added the X4 to its Best Inventions 2024 list.
  • 2025 – X5 and X4 Air. X5 brought larger 1/1.28-inch sensors and user-replaceable lenses. X4 Air made 8K 360° lighter and more affordable. The same year Insta360 received a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award from NATAS for its 360° camera technology and software.
  • 2026 – X6. The current flagship, launched on 12 August 2026.

Insta360 describes itself as the world's leading 360° camera brand, citing a Frost & Sullivan report on global panoramic camera market share for 2023.

How have 360° cameras improved over the generations?

Four areas have moved the most.

Resolution and sensors

360° footage is spread across a whole sphere, so when you reframe a small part of it you need a lot of pixels to start with. That's why resolution climbed from 4K on the ONE to 5.7K on the ONE X and 8K on the X4. Sensor size grew too, from 1/2-inch on the X3 and X4 to 1/1.28-inch on the X5 and 1/1.1-inch square sensors on the X6. Bigger sensors mean less noise, more dynamic range and better colour.

Stabilisation and horizon levelling

FlowState stabilisation uses the camera's gyroscope data to smooth out bumps. 360° Horizon Lock keeps the horizon level even when the camera rolls right over.

The Invisible Selfie Stick effect

The stick sits in the blind spot between the two lenses, so it disappears from the stitched image. The result looks like a drone or a camera operator following you, even though you're simply holding a stick.

Waterproofing, durability and low light

Early models needed a separate housing to go underwater. The X4 is waterproof to 10m, the X5 and X4 Air to 15m, and the X6 to 20m without a case. Replaceable lenses on the X5 and X6 mean a scratched lens no longer ends the camera's life. Low-light performance has improved with every sensor upgrade, helped by PureVideo noise reduction on recent models.

What makes the Insta360 X6 the most capable 360° camera?

The X6 is described by Insta360 as the biggest leap in the X series so far. Here is what is inside.

Triple AI Chip processing

The X6 uses a three-chip system: an 8-core, 3.3GHz, 4nm flagship processor plus two dedicated imaging chips. Insta360 says this gives 500% more computing power than the X5 while drawing 35% less power. That headroom is what makes 8K at 50fps, on-camera AI editing and in-camera Dolby Vision possible.

Imaging: bigger sensors, more light

  • Dual custom 1/1.1-inch square sensors with 33% more area than the X5, which Insta360 says take in roughly four times the light per frame.
  • 8K/50fps 360° video, 6K/60fps and 4K/120fps for slow motion, plus 5K/60fps single-lens video.
  • 10-bit colour and I-Log for grading, and AdaptiveTone 2.0, which meters each lens separately for wider dynamic range.
  • Native in-camera Dolby Vision. Insta360 says the X6 is the first 360° camera to offer this.
  • 120MP 360° photos, which is a big step for virtual tours and real estate.

Built for long, tough shoots

  • 2600mAh Xtreme Battery: around 140 minutes of 8K/30fps, and 0–80% in about 24 minutes.
  • 47GB of usable built-in storage, so you can record even if you forget your microSD card.
  • 20m waterproofing, or 60m with the Invisible Dive Case Pro.
  • Replaceable Lenses 2.0, Star-Ridge cooling and a bright 2.32-inch OLED touchscreen.
  • Wind-protected 360° microphones, plus direct pairing with up to two Insta360 Mic Air or Mic Pro transmitters.

What reviewers say about the X6

"The X6 has the best 360 camera quality available now."

Kyle Barr, Gizmodo

"I can comfortably say the X6 is the best 360 camera for low-light shooting currently available."

Sam Kieldsen, TechRadar

"The high-spec X6 balances ease-of-use with pro features like i-Log and 10-bit color."

James Trew, Engadget

"It's after dark that the X6 really separates itself from the pack, though."

Sam Kieldsen, TechRadar

Reviewers also flagged a few points to be aware of. The X6 sits at the premium end of the range, its 8K files fill the built-in storage quickly, and TechRadar found the launch version of the mobile app unstable and best run on a recent phone. Keeping the app and firmware updated matters.

How does Insta360 software and AI editing work?

The camera is only half the story. The Insta360 app (iOS and Android) and Insta360 Studio (desktop) are where 360° footage becomes a finished video.

  • Reframing: drag the view, add keyframes, and create pans, zooms and transitions after you've filmed.
  • Deep Track and InstaFrame 2.0: pick a subject and the software follows it automatically, so the output is a flat video that keeps them in frame.
  • AI Director: on the X6, the camera analyses your footage while it charges and builds a highlight edit.
  • Auto Edit 2.0: creates a complete edit from one clip or many.
  • PanoMind: Insta360's in-house 360° AI model, which the company says was trained on more than 10,000 hours of footage across 30+ scenarios.
  • Moments Pro: a cloud tool that builds a video from a subject, mood, style and time range you choose.

"With all its automatic shooting modes, the X6 is more hands-free than ever."

Kyle Barr, Gizmodo

360° camera vs a normal action camera: which should you buy?

A single-lens action camera points one way. What you see is what you get, the files are smaller and editing is quick. A 360° camera captures every direction, so you never miss the moment behind you and you can direct the shot later.

  • Choose a 360° camera if you want third-person "drone-style" shots, never want to miss the action, or enjoy creative editing.
  • Choose a single-lens action camera, such as the Insta360 ACE Pro 2, if you want the simplest workflow, smaller files and a sharp flat image straight out of the camera.

Many 360° owners use single-lens mode too. The X6 records 5K/60fps flat video when you just want a classic wide shot.

What is the best 360° camera for your activity?

Best 360° camera for underwater and diving

The X6 is waterproof to 20m on its own, which covers snorkelling and most freediving. For scuba, add the X6 Invisible Dive Case Pro, rated to 60m. Insta360 notes the Invisible Dive Case is needed for proper 360° underwater stitching.

Best 360° camera for motorcycles

Mounted on a helmet or a handlebar with the Invisible Selfie Stick, a 360° camera shows the rider, the bike and the road in one shot. The X6 adds upgraded windproof microphones and what Insta360 calls a motorcycle-tuned Hidden Engine Mic. The X6 Motorcycle Bundle is a ready-made starting point.

Best 360° camera for cars and track days

A suction-cup mount outside the car, or an in-car mount near the rear-view mirror, records the driver, the cockpit and the circuit together. Horizon Lock keeps the picture level through fast corners, and the X6's long battery life covers a full session.

Best 360° camera for cycling

On a bike, the Invisible Selfie Stick on a seat-post or back mount produces a chase-cam view. The X4 Air is a good lighter alternative if weight matters most.

Best 360° camera for skiing and snow

The X6 is rated to operate down to −20°C, and its battery is rated reliable at that temperature too. FlowState keeps fast runs smooth, and Horizon Lock keeps the slope level even after a fall.

Best 360° camera for travel and vlogging

One camera covers landscapes, selfies and walking shots. Hold the stick out and you get the "someone is filming me" look without a crew. For vlogging, two wireless Mic Pro transmitters connect directly to the X6 for clear voice.

Best 360° camera for real estate and virtual tours

The X6's 120MP 360° photos capture a whole room in a single shot, with enough detail for virtual tours and property listings.

Best 360° camera for beginners

If you're new to 360°, the X4 Air is lighter and more affordable while still shooting 8K. AI editing tools in the app do much of the work for you.
