Insta360 Luna Ultra: The Leica Gimbal Camera Built for Everyday Life

Insta360 Luna Ultra gimbal camera

Published 22 October 2026 · By the insta360.ae Team

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is a pocket-sized gimbal camera: a small camera on a built-in 3-axis mechanical stabiliser that you hold in one hand. It records 8K video through a Leica Summicron main lens and adds a telephoto lens and a detachable touchscreen. It's built for everyday life rather than extreme sports, so travel, vlogging, family moments, food, events and nights out all suit it.

Here's what kind of camera it is, how Insta360 approached the category, its best features, and how it fits each way people actually use it.

What kind of camera is the Insta360 Luna Ultra?

Insta360 calls the Luna Ultra a "flagship dual-lens 8K gimbal camera", co-engineered with Leica. Leica describes it as a mobile gimbal camera for photo and video on the go.

In practice it sits between a smartphone and a full camera kit:

  • It's small enough for a pocket, at about 233g.
  • The lens sits on a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, so walking shots stay smooth.
  • It uses a large 1-inch sensor, which helps in dim light and gives a more natural background blur.
  • It works alone. You don't need a phone attached to frame or record.

It's best thought of as a lifestyle camera: the one you take everywhere, for moments you'd otherwise film on your phone, only with gimbal-smooth motion, a large sensor and an optical telephoto lens.

How did Insta360 rethink the gimbal camera?

Insta360 wasn't the first company to make a pocket gimbal camera. The Luna series, which launched on 10 June 2026, is its entry into that space. Insta360 used its debut to rethink several basics of the format.

  • Two lenses instead of one. A 20mm-equivalent Leica Summicron main lens on a 1-inch sensor is paired with a 60mm-equivalent telephoto lens on a 1/1.3-inch sensor. That gives a true 3× optical step for portraits and distant subjects.
  • A screen that comes off. The 2-inch OLED touchscreen detaches and becomes a wireless monitor and remote, with HD transmission up to 20m. Insta360 describes this as an industry first.
  • Triple AI Chip processing, which powers subject tracking, PureVideo low-light mode and 8K recording.
  • Leica colour. The co-engineered optics come with Leica Natural, Vivid and Chrome colour profiles.
  • Creator workflow built in: 47GB of built-in storage, 10-bit I-Log, built-in timecode and ACES support.

"A stunning category debut with gorgeous imagery, clever hardware and impressive real-world performance."

What are the Luna Ultra's best features?

8K video from a 1-inch sensor

The main camera records 8K at 30fps with Dolby Vision, plus 4K at up to 120fps and 1080p at 240fps for slow motion. Insta360 quotes up to 14 stops of dynamic range in 10-bit I-Log, which gives editors room to grade.

"Video quality from the 1in 8K sensor is stunning."

Sam Kieldsen, Stuff

Telephoto zoom

The second lens gives 6× lossless zoom, and Insta360's launch announcement quotes up to 12× zoom in total. That suits faces across a room, a stage, wildlife or architectural details.

"The more I used the camera, the more I grew to love the zoom."

James Trew, Engadget

The detachable 2-inch OLED screen

Clip the screen on to use it like a normal camera, or pull it off to frame yourself from a tripod, start recording from across the room, or let a friend direct the shot. The screen can rotate for vertical video, and it has its own microphone.

"The removable control panel is easily the Luna Ultra’s best feature."

Kyle Barr, Gizmodo

"Insta360's display innovation here genuinely feels useful — with bonus points for being fun."

AI tracking: Deep Track 5.0

Auto Tracking keeps a person centred as they move. Active Zoom Tracking adjusts the zoom as they come closer or move away. Group Tracking keeps several people in frame, and Smart Framing composes the shot for you. AI editing in the Insta360 app then finds key moments and assembles a shareable edit.

Low light with PureVideo

PureVideo mode reduces noise and lifts detail in dim scenes at up to 4K/60fps. Stuff described its PureVideo results as "sharp, clean and genuinely usable".

Audio built for talking

There are four built-in microphones (three on the body and one on the screen), a pre-fitted wind guard and 32-bit audio. Two Insta360 Mic Pro or Mic Air transmitters can connect directly, without a separate receiver, which makes two-person interviews simple.

Battery and storage

A 1550mAh battery gives up to four hours of use in Insta360's lab test and charges to 80% in about 23 minutes. With 47GB of built-in storage you can shoot even without a card, and microSD is supported for longer days.

Specs from Insta360's Luna Ultra product page and the Luna Ultra and Luna Pro launch announcements.

What is the Luna Ultra good for?

Is the Luna Ultra good for travel?

Yes. It's pocketable, the gimbal smooths walking shots through souks and old towns, and the telephoto lens picks out details such as a minaret or a dhow on the creek. Built-in storage and four-hour battery life mean less to carry.

Is the Luna Ultra a good vlogging camera?

This is its home ground. Face tracking keeps you centred, the screen shows your framing, and two wireless mics connect directly for clean voice.

"The Insta360 Luna Ultra is great at vlogging, but that’s just scratching the surface."

Kyle Barr, Gizmodo

Family, kids and everyday life

Children don't stay still. Auto Tracking follows them, and Group Tracking keeps the whole family in frame at a birthday or on the beach. Because it fits in a pocket, it's easy to bring every day.

Food and restaurants

The main lens focuses as close as 9cm, so you can film plating details and then pull back for the table. The 1-inch sensor copes with moody restaurant lighting.

Events and weddings

The telephoto lens lets guests film speeches, the first dance or a stage without pushing to the front. 10-bit I-Log and timecode help if the footage goes to an editor. For a professional wedding film it's best as a second camera or for behind-the-scenes clips.

Low light and nightlife

PureVideo mode and the large 1-inch sensor are designed for exactly these scenes: city lights, rooftop dinners and night markets. In Gizmodo's testing, colours "often seemed true-to-life, whether in bright or dim lighting conditions."

Interviews and podcasts

Put the Luna Ultra on its thread handle or a small tripod, clip a Mic Pro on each speaker, and use the detachable screen to check framing from your seat. Group Tracking can keep both people in shot.

Content creators and short-form video

Vertical framing, AI editing in the app and Leica colour profiles make it quick to go from shooting to posting. Pros can shoot I-Log and grade later.

Can you live stream with the Luna Ultra?

Insta360 doesn't list live streaming as a headline Luna Ultra feature. If streaming is your main goal, the Insta360 Link 2 Pro webcam or a smartphone on the Flow 2 Pro gimbal are better fits. Use the Luna Ultra for recorded content.

Who might prefer a different Insta360 camera?

Reviewers were positive overall, but they noted a few trade-offs worth knowing before you buy:

  • Price: it sits at the premium end of pocket cameras, and the Creator Bundle costs more again. The Luna Pro is the lower-cost way into the Luna series.
  • Storage at 8K: Engadget pointed out that 8K fills the built-in storage quickly, so add a fast microSD card for long days.
  • Not a water or crash camera: for diving, jet skis, motorcycles or mountain biking, choose an Insta360 X6, X5 or ACE Pro 2 instead.
  • Tracking focus: Gizmodo found tracking works best on people rather than objects.
